On Monday, February 27, two members of the Verizon State Government Affairs office and a representative from the Montgomery County Council attended The Academy of the Holy Cross all-school assembly to recognize the student PantryPal team. The team was named Best in State and Best in Region in the 2017 Verizon Innovative Learning App Challenge. Their app concept “PantryPal” helped connect donors to local food pantries to provide needed items.
During the assembly, Vikrum Mathur, legislative aid in the Office of Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner, congratulated the team for their app concept and spoke about the importance of finding ways to meet the needs of food pantries. He presented each girl on the team with a certificate from the Council. Mario Acosta-Velez and Larry Graham from the Verizon State Government Affairs office presented the six girls on the team and their faculty advisor, Lauren DeZinno with certificates and Verizon tablets. They also presented President Katy Prebble with a $5,000 check for Holy Cross. Mr. Acosta-Velez encouraged all the girls to consider participating the Innovative Learning App Challenge next year.
