Washington International School will host the second annual Children Are Citizens (CAC) conference on Sunday-Monday, October 6-7, 2019.

CAC LogoInspired by the practices of the municipal preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, CAC was started in DC in 2014 under the guidance of Project Zero researchers Mara Krechevsky and Ben Mardell. The Professional Development Collaborative has had the honor of serving as the local project manager since CAC's inception. We've worked with over 60 classrooms across 10 schools, affecting over 1000 students--mostly in Title I settings.

The aim of CAC is to foster civic agency in our youngest learners. The project focuses on two main features: (1) in-depth professional development for teachers with an emphasis on documentation of children's learning and on building a curricular project around students' ideas of how to make their community a better place for children, and (2) enacting the curricular project, aided by cultural institution partners, that results in positive action in the community.
