The ninth annual Washington International School Summer Institute for Teachers (WISSIT) will take place from August 1-5, 2022. This high-quality professional development opportunity is open to educators in traditional public, public charter, religious, and independent schools, as well as in early learning centers, museums, and other educational organizations. This year, for the first time ever, we will hold concurrent but separate in-person and virtual tracks of WISSIT. The content for WISSIT is inspired by research coming out of Project Zero (PZ), a research group at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, which has been an innovative leader in the domains of teaching and learning for over 50 years. Washington International School has enjoyed a decades-long relationship with Project Zero and spearheads the effort in the DC area to infuse classrooms, from preschool through high school and beyond, with PZ ideas. WISSIT faculty will feature renowned Project Zero researchers as well as leading local educators. The institute will invite participants to reflect deeply on ways to design and facilitate enriching, rigorous learning opportunities for their students. Large and small group sessions will address the following themes:
Given the positive impact Project Zero conferences and institutes have had on educators around the globe, we expect this week of learning to be a transformative professional development experience. Throughout the five days at WISSIT, participants will experience pedagogical tools and frameworks developed at Project Zero. The learning will continue into the academic year, as participants gather for workshops and share classroom experiences in person through our DC-Project Zero network. Registration ends in late June. Schools or organizations that send three or more participants will receive a discount off the registration fee. We highly recommend that schools sending teams of teachers also include an administrator; we have designed some content specifically for school leaders. A limited number of scholarships are on offer to educators in Title I schools and to those pursuing teacher licensure. Full attendance the entire week is required.
