A Relational Approach to Engaging Boys in Learning

Getting the best from boys in school has been historically challenging. A gender achievement gap has existed for over a century and seems only to be getting worse. After conducting several global studies, psychologist Michael Reichert found not only that boys were “relational learners,” but that even the most hardened resistance could be transformed by an effective relational approach. Indeed, to engage a boy in a learning partnership, the teacher or coach must first connect with him.

Based on these studies, which included over 2,500 adolescent boys and 2,000 of their teachers in over 50 schools from six countries, Dr. Reichert offers a framework for engaging boys in learning that has been validated by educators and by boys themselves. What the framework requires of both schools and teachers represents an overall strategy for overcoming a problem that is more and more consequential.

This workshop will be comprised of three modules, each covering a topic derived from this research:

  • An overall summary of effective teaching practices with boys.
  • A more focused summary of effective and ineffective relational strategies.
  • An introduction to a collaborative exercise to help teachers/coaches “reset” when they are unable to repair a relational breakdown with a student.

Suggested Readings:

  • Michael Reichert & Richard Hawley, Reaching Boys, Teaching Boys: Strategies That Work and Why (Jossey Bass, 2010).
  • Michael Reichert & Richard Hawley, I Can Learn from You: Boys as Relational Learners (Harvard Education Press, 2014).

About the Presenter

PresenterMichael Reichert, Ph.D. is an applied and research psychologist who has immersed himself in clinical, research, and consultation experiences that have afforded a deep understanding of the conditions that allow a child to flourish in natural contexts: families, schools, and communities. He has created and run programs in both inner city communities and in some of the most affluent suburban communities in the world. His timely work has been featured in the New York TimesThe Atlantic, and on CBS News. He is author of numerous articles and several books, including Reaching Boys, Teaching Boys: Lessons About What Works--and WhyI Can Learn From You: Boys as Relational Learners; and a book for parents, How to Raise a Boy: The Power of Connection to Build Good Men.

For ten years, he helped to create and led an intervention for high-risk youth in the tri-state region around Philadelphia. The program raised over $4 million in grants and was named a “promising practice” for reducing youth violence by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. He continues to lead The Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives, which trains high school students in research methods to explore pressing questions about relationships and identity.
