Barrie School is an independent day school located on a beautiful 45-acre wooded campus in Silver Spring, MD, enrolling approximately 350 students. The school program begins at the two-year-old, Pre-Kindergarten level and continues through Grade 12
Barrie Lower School offers a Montessori curriculum with a multi-sensory approach to learning, enabling students to reach beyond their grasp, put theory into practice, and ask pertinent questions. Barrie Middle and Upper Schools provide a college preparatory program in a challenging and supportive environment, preparing students to become successful college graduates, active citizens, and leaders in the global community.
Now in its seventy-eighth year, Barrie has evolved and developed significantly since its founding in 1932. In 1976, the school relocated to Layhill Road and has faced numerous challenges. In 1994 the Board of Trustees purchased the land from the Seldin family, and Barrie became an independent, non-profit school. In 1999, the long-awaited Center for Athletics and Performing Arts opened. Despite numerous moves and structural changes, Barrie’s philosophy still ties us to the past. Barrie still celebrates its historic roots and ageless values. Yet with all of this change, the core of the institution has remained constant.
