Navigating Challenging Election Issues at School

Wednesday, September 18, 2024
9:00-11:00 a.m.

The Langley School

1411 Balls Hill Rd.
McLean, VA

This workshop, led by the Close Up Foundation, is designed to help teachers and administrators across all disciplines frame and respond to discussions about complex social and political issues, with a specific focus on the upcoming elections.

In this session, educators will:

  • Explore strategies for navigating controversial election topics by helping students focus on issues instead of candidates.
  • Learn practical techniques to establish norms that foster empathy and civil discourse.
  • Apply a values framework to multiple policy issues to engage in productive discourse.
  • Examine a set of scenarios and learn actionable techniques to keep students on track when discourse breaks down.
ABOUT CLOSE UP

Longtime partners before merging in 2023, Close Up and NNSP share a steadfast commitment to civics and community engagement. Together, they have over 50 years of experience partnering with school districts nationwide to serve more than one million students and educators through experiential learning programs in our nation's capital and in local communities, professional development, and curriculum design and consulting. Their goal is to connect what students learn in class to the real world around them, help them articulate their own views and listen to those of others, and engage with people of different backgrounds with tolerance and understanding.
