Join Heads and Trustees from Maryland, D.C., and Virginia to discuss some key issues facing independent school leaders today.  Executive Coach Laurie Cameron (L) and former Head of School and Trustee Val Wise (R) will offer tips for leading mindfully and with purpose and will guide Boards in understanding their critical role in supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at their schools.

Reflective Leadership: Navigating with Awareness, Purpose, and Connection

It has been a complex year for leaders. The circumstances of the pandemic have forced school heads and trustees to summon an extraordinary amount of resilience, fortitude, and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. As we look ahead to a new school year with guarded optimism, hoping that we can return to a place that is more familiar and certain, how do we re-calibrate? How do we become the reflective leaders that our schools need at this critical time? Join Laurie Cameron, an executive leadership coach, expert on workplace well-being, and certified mindfulness teacher, for an engaging session on how to lead with awareness, purpose, and connection. This is the leadership tune-up you need to effectively steward your schools towards what’s next.

Unlocking the Promise of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: The Role of the Board of Trustees

Many Independent schools across the country have placed a renewed focus on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in light of a global pandemic, political crisis, racial upheaval, and climate change. Schools are charting a path forward that may mean the kind of substantive change that will eliminate barriers for children from marginalized groups. The success of any DEI plan will require the thoughtful and purposeful engagement of the board of trustees who are uniquely positioned to advance DEI efforts. This multimedia presentation with Dr. Valaida Wise will examine the critical function of trustee members in the successful implementation of DEI and answer questions such as:

  • How to start the work
  • What should the board know about the school's DEI efforts?
  • How does the board launch a DEI Committee and should it?
  • What is the relationship between the Board and the DEI Director?
  • How can boards ward off fatigue?

Participants will leave with practical strategies for immediate implementation that will positively alter the trajectory of all students, particularly those from marginalized groups.

The schedule will also include time for discussion with leaders and colleagues at schools of similar size as well as breakouts around topical issues of interest. Heads and Board Leaders should plan on attending this program together.

Cost for the 1/2 day program: $100 per school (Head, Board Chair, and Board leadership only)

This event takes place via Zoom. Participants will receive a link to the program the day before the event as well as the day of.
